Option to compress .dat project files

It would be nice if, maybe as a project setting, .dat files could be saved as a compressed file. When working with version control, especially on 512x512 files, the file sizes can add up very quickly. I've noticed that just putting the files in a .zip gets some pretty significant file size savings, so maybe an option to run some sort of gzip or other algorithm on the .dat file itself when saving it would be nice!
